We learned that more than 1,269 bottles were stolen by employees of the Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) in just under ten years, worth a total of $116,919 The newspaper.
This data was provided to the Journal in response to an access to information request (see table at end). More than 7,223 people work at SAQ.
A majority of these thefts occurred in 2021-2022, when two employees alone stole more than 1,000 bottles, as La Presse previously reported.
The SAQ wants to reassure
When asked by Le Journal, the SAQ emphasized that all retail companies can be affected by fraud committed by their employees.
“This is an issue that we take very seriously and we believe that the data does not show an exceptional problem,” analyzed its spokeswoman Geneviève Cormier.
According to her, the SAQ has a team with experience to take care of their security.
“It uses various means and techniques to detect problematic cases and we believe we are doing what is necessary to counteract this phenomenon,” she concluded.
