Playing The Witcher on a MacBook Air M1? Now it’s possible – Frandroid

February 7, 2025 by istri

The first two works of The Witcher license are now optimized for Apple Silicon chips and their ARM architecture. Excellent news, which unfortunately does not yet extend to the third part of the franchise.

Playing The Witcher (in the “Enhanced Edition”) or The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings on a simple MacBook Air M1 is now possible under the best conditions. Through a contribution shared on account X of the licenseCD Projekt RED confirms that it has optimized the first two parts of the saga for Apple Silicon chips and their ARM architecture.

In detail we learn that this optimization comes thanks to an update made available on Steam, GOG and the Mac AppStore, where the two games are also distributed. This makes The Witcher 1 and 2 fully compatible with the M1, M2 and M3 chips. The only requirement to use this new feature is an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS Ventura (or a newer version).

The Witcher 3 not affected (yet?).

Note that this optimization unfortunately does not affect The Witcher 3. The much more ambitious third work in the franchise is therefore set aside, at least for now. The reason ? Porting the first two games from the x86 architecture to ARM probably required less work.

As the specialist site iPhoneSoft emphasizes, the developers certainly used the Game Porting Toolkit presented by Apple at WWDC 2023 to make these two ports easier to carry out. Logically, the two titles should also benefit from the improvements of macOS Sonoma (the latest version of macOS to date) dedicated to gaming.

Manage my decisions

If nothing tells us that The Witcher 3 will not benefit from the same treatment a little later (which would be all the more logical given the good graphics capabilities of the latest M3 chips), we will therefore have to be content with the time of The Witcher 1 and 2 .

And if the first work shows the weight of the years both visually and in terms of gameplay, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings still looks great even 12 years after its original release on PC. The title also benefits from a particularly carefully branched plot that is in no way inferior to CD Projekt’s more recent productions.
