Last September, Facebook’s parent company unveiled a new generation of its Ray-Ban connected glasses during its Meta Connect conference. One of the flagship features is the multimodal artificial intelligence Meta AI. Announced for 2024, Meta has just activated it for a small number of users via an update.
These glasses have no screen, all interactions are done via voice. It is basically a voice assistant equipped with a camera and worn on the face. Using multimodal artificial intelligence, the glasses can understand spoken questions, use the camera to visually analyze what is in front of the user, and then respond verbally.
A feature only available in the US
To activate the AI, simply say “Hey Meta”. There is then the option of asking him to look, followed by a question (“Look and…”). On Instagram, Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated by asking what pants he should wear with the shirt he was holding. He also asked the AI to write a caption, identify a fruit and translate the text. Such an always-present assistant could be a valuable help, especially for visually impaired people. Each time, the AI takes a photo using the glasses to analyze it, saving the image and query to the associated smartphone app, creating a history that the user can later search.
With this new feature, the Ray-Ban Meta glasses closely resemble Humane’s AI Pin smart badge. However, the latter completely replaces the smartphone, while Meta’s connected glasses only work in conjunction with his smartphone. Currently, Multimodal AI is in beta with limited access and is only available in the US.
