Meet the stars this Thursday at the André Malraux Center – Midi Libre

June 8, 2025 by istri

One Thursday a month the MJC hosts Meet the Stars, a 45-minute conference followed by a sweet snack.

In this new meeting, Julien Morin will moderate the Extremely Large Telescope conference this Thursday, December 7th at 8:30 p.m.: a 39m telescope designed to expand the boundaries of knowledge about our universe.

Since 2005, the European Southern Observatory has been working on the development of a 39 m diameter telescope in collaboration with laboratories and manufacturers on the continent. This Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) will not only be the world’s largest telescope in the visible and infrared range, but will also be equipped with a range of state-of-the-art instruments designed to answer numerous scientific questions.

The last decade has been rich in important astronomical discoveries, from the discovery of planets orbiting Proxima Centauri, the star closest to the Sun, to the first images of black hole environments. Starting in 2028, the ELT will enable tackling several major challenges in modern astrophysics. Near the solar system, it will be possible to study the atmosphere of Earth-like exoplanets in detail. At the edges of the observable universe, it will also be able to discover and study the first generation of galaxies.

Magnetic field and exoplanet

Julien Morin is a researcher at the Montpellier Universe and Particles Laboratory (LUMP).

After defending his doctoral thesis at the University of Toulouse in 2009, he worked at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies in Ireland and then as an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation fellow at the University of Göttingen in Germany.

In 2013 he joined the LUMP of the University of Montpellier 2, the future University of Montpellier. In 2016, he participated in the discovery of “Proxima b”, the closest exoplanet to the solar system. He is currently continuing his research on the magnetic fields of stars and their effects on exoplanets as part of an international collaboration with the Spirou instrument at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope.
