Podcast, Episode 16: Can We Slow Down Brain Aging? – The Radieuses

December 22, 2023 by istri

We had the pleasure of meeting Dr. We would like to welcome David Fortin, with whom we discussed the incredible complexity of the human brain in all simplicity, because he is an excellent popularizer! He is a neurosurgeon, neuro-oncologist and full professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Sherbrooke, where he leads the Brain Tumor Research Laboratory.

We discussed with him the factors of brain aging and the measures that allow us to protect it and keep it healthy as much as possible. If it can reassure you, he mentioned that these common memory losses that many of us suffer from are common and can be frustrating, but in most cases they are normal, even in our 40s. .

Dr. Fortin also discussed cognitive disorders to look out for and signals to look out for. He also addressed the question of whether there are differences in the brains of women and men and how these differences are expressed. Finally, the effects of divided attention on our brain were discussed.

To learn more about the brain

In his latest book, The Seasons of the Brain, he segments the brain’s phases throughout life; this representation allows us to clearly understand the evolution from growth to decline. What I also appreciated about this book was the sharing of some of his experiences and we can clearly feel his passion for his profession.

For those who, like me, would like to better understand how this extraordinary organ works, Dr. Fortin’s first book “The Brain, a Galaxy in Your Head” was a little harder to read in my opinion, but all in all interesting and well popularized. Imagine, and I quote an excerpt from the book: “It is said that there are as many neural connections in the brain as there are stars in our galaxy.”
