Google Maps has made slight changes to its color palette: while subtle, they still triggered knee-jerk reactions from users. The shade of blue used to represent bodies of water is now significantly lighter, approaching an almost turquoise tone. Roads that were once white are now gray, while forest areas are represented by a darker green. These adjustments are not radical, but they are significant enough to bother users accustomed to the old version of the application.
Why fix what isn’t broken?
The reason for these changes was not specified by Google, but some similarity to Apple Maps can be seen. This update obviously led to some direct comparisons, particularly regarding the new tinting of bodies of water and roads. However, it should be noted that the Google Maps interface has not undergone any significant changes other than the use of a darker green for directions.
Reddit’s online forums and Twitter are full of comments from dissatisfied users. Many feel that the new colors affect the readability of the app, especially in general map views. When you zoom in, it looks a little better. One Reddit user complained that the new colors aren’t that easy to read and that they would prefer to go back to the old palette if possible (there is no customization). Another criticized Google for unnecessarily changing what was already working well.

The biggest concern is that the new colors will make it difficult to see details on the maps, which have been described as “extremely washed out.” Some users feel disoriented by these sudden changes after years of using a familiar interface.
Google has not yet officially responded to user feedback about these changes. The future of this new color palette therefore remains uncertain and it is possible that user pressure will trick the search engine into reverting to the old version. However, the return to the previous design is not a win: as with everything, we will eventually get used to the new. And if Google decides to review the color palette, it will inevitably cause a new outcry!
