Quebecers’ consumption habits are changing more than ever, especially due to the rising cost of living and inflation.

A recent study by NielsenIQ reports that pasta takes pride of place in Quebecers’ shopping baskets.
Due to their low price, instant noodles are also increasingly finding their way into consumers’ shopping baskets.
The study highlights some insightful consumer habits, here are some examples:
- 6 out of 10 foods are on offer
- Fewer restaurant trips
- Sales of ready meals are increasing
- Increased use of promotional brochures: More than 60% of Quebecers browse them
How do Quebecers save?
Unsurprisingly, the study also shows that people are increasingly opting for meals at home, which are significantly cheaper than eating out.
Given the current economic climate and rent costs that have skyrocketed over the past five years, Quebecers are choosing to invest in housing rather than food and are doing what they can to save.
“Quebecers are the masters of advertising brochures,” says Sylvain Charlebois, an agricultural and food industry specialist at Dalhousie University. “Flyers have been very popular with Quebecers for years.”

However, the expert predicts that there will be a shift towards loyalty programs.
“Grocerers are increasingly offering us aggressive discounts through their loyalty programs,” he says.
Mr Charlebois added that forecasts point to a decline in inflation by the end of 2024.
