A See’s Candies location at the Embarcadero Center in downtown San Francisco will have its last day of operation on Sunday, according to a store employee.
Store employees will move to the company’s nearby location at 542 Market St. The closure leaves three See’s Candies locations in San Francisco, including one at 754 Clement St. in the Richmond District and another store in the Stonestown Galleria shopping center.
The company is also operating a pop-up location at the Fairmont Hotel during the holidays. See’s Candies did not respond to a request for comment about the reason for the closure.
The Embarcadero Center is grappling with a broader vacancy problem that has plagued downtown San Francisco as the pandemic has shifted office work patterns. Many retail stores in the Financial District have closed due to the dramatic decline in foot traffic.
Earlier this year, Banana Republic closed its Embarcadero Center location due to a major retreat by parent company Gap Inc.
Vacant spaces at Embarcadero Center were converted into temporary pop-up retail locations as part of the city-funded Vacant to Vibrant program.
See’s Candies is a California institution known for its variety of candies, often given as gifts around the holidays. From a single store in Los Angeles in 1921, the company has expanded to more than 200 locations across the country.
See’s headquarters are in South San Francisco and the company is controlled by Berkshire Hathaway, billionaire Warren Buffett’s conglomerate.
